The Kwara StateGovernment has confiscated alleged unwholesome cow meat in the Akerebiata Abattoir market in Ilorin.
The Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Funke Sokoya said the action was aimed at protecting people from consuming unhealthy meat in the State.
Mrs. Sokoya disclosed that one of the core mandates of the Ministry is to protect public health and safeguard residents from harm in the State.
She pleaded with the butchers union and owners of the confiscated meat to cooperate with the staff of the Ministry in all the slaughter slabs and abattoirs across the State to ensure safe meat for public consumption.
The Permanent Secretary further advised both livestock farmers and butchers to insure their assets to minimise the risk involved in the livestock business.
The Director, Veterinary Services, of the Ministry, Dr. Abdullateef Salman Olugbon advised butchers to always ensure they slaughter healthy animals for public consumption and assured them of the government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening their capacity through training and re-training for improved productivity in the sector.
The Chairman, Cooperative Harmony Butchers Union, Alhaji Moshood Abdulquadri said the union has always supported the Ministry to ensure that only safe meat and meat products leave the Akerebiata Abattoir and further appreciated the State government’s effort in prioritising citizen’s wellbeing.
He also solicited for assistance on the insurance policy for their assets.
