A heated conversation has emerged on social media (twitter ) now ( X)following the circulation of pictures highlighting the fashion sense and social presence of two former Nigerian First Ladies, Stella Obasanjo and Maryam Babangida, alongside prominent global elites.

Netizens have taken to various platforms to compare the style, relevance, and legacies of both women, reigniting discussions about their impact during their time as First Ladies.

Stella Obasanjo, the late wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, served as Nigeria’s First Lady from 1999 until her untimely death in 2005. Known for her strong stance on issues such as women’s liberation and youth empowerment, she was a political force in her own right.

Maryam Babangida, wife of former military President Ibrahim Babangida, is remembered for her groundbreaking Better Life for Rural Women Programme, which brought attention to the welfare of rural women and engaged wives of senior state officials in advocacy and outreach efforts.

The debate began when an X.com user, #FSYusuf, posted a photo of Stella Obasanjo with Queen Elizabeth II, captioned, “No First Lady of Nigeria comes close.”

The post quickly gained traction, with some users agreeing, while others argued in favor of Maryam Babangida.

Reacting to Yusuf’s(twitter influencer )post, another user, #Millimoney_, shared photos of Maryam Babangida, writing, “Lmaoooo! No disrespect to Stella, but you obviously have never heard of Maryam Babangida. Look at these drips! As a fashion designer, I can tell you her styles were ahead of their time, and the overall styling was iconic.

Adding a critical perspective, #georgedrawstuff commented:
“Nigerians have this innate ability to always praise the same people responsible for the decline of the country. It’s why we struggle to progress—we’re too quick to forget the past.”

Others focused on Maryam Babangida’s broader impact, like #KingLerry, who wrote, “My mom told me Maryam was the reason why female-dominated fields like nursing got better pay in the Nigerian civil service. A style icon who made sure her girls were fed! She started what is today known as the Office of the First Lady and championed equal rights for all women.”

While Stella Obasanjo is celebrated for her activism and poise, Maryam Babangida’s influence as a pioneer of First Lady-led initiatives continues to resonate.
