Remembering Rashidi Yekini On What Would Have Been His 61st Birthday Today
Golden Oldies is remembering Nigerian former professional footballer Rashidi Yekini on his birthday today (23 October 1963 – 4 May 2012). He would have been 60 today. The former Shooting Stars striker played 62 games for the Super Eagles and he remains leading scorer with 37 goals. He represented the nation in seven major tournaments, including two World Cups where he scored the country’s first-ever goal in the competition. He was also named the African Footballer of the Year in 1993. He was said to be suffering from bipolar disorder, depression and some other undisclosed psychiatric condition. He died at the young age of 48.
